Planning a Honeymoon in Sri Lanka

What Sri Lanka offers that a beach-only honeymoon does not

The obvious comparison is the Maldives, an hour away by air, and the two are genuinely different propositions. The Maldives is one thing done exceptionally well: a private island, a lagoon, and nothing to do. Sri Lanka is variety — you can be watching leopards on Monday, in a tea planter's bungalow on Wednesday and on an empty beach on Friday.

For couples who would be restless after four days on a single island, that variety is the argument. Many honeymooners do both: a week touring Sri Lanka, then a few days in the Maldives to collapse. Flights between Colombo and Malé are short and frequent.

The other point in Sri Lanka's favour is value at the top end. Luxury here — genuine 5-star hotels, private villas, colonial estate bungalows with a full staff — costs meaningfully less than the equivalent in the Maldives or the Seychelles.

A structure that works

The pattern most honeymoon itineraries settle into is culture first, wildlife second, beach last — ending with the part where you do nothing, rather than starting with it.

The accommodation worth planning around

Sri Lanka's distinctive luxury is not international-brand resorts, though those exist. It is a small number of property types you cannot easily find elsewhere.

Tea planters' bungalows in the hill country are colonial estate houses, often with only four or five rooms, a resident cook and butler, open fires in the evening, and views over tea to the horizon. Ceylon Tea Trails around Hatton is the best known; there are smaller alternatives.

Luxury tented camps near Yala put you under canvas with a proper bed and a private deck, close enough to hear the park at night. For most couples these are the nights they talk about afterwards.

On the coast, the south between Tangalle and Dickwella has a run of small villa hotels on near-empty beaches. Galle Fort has boutique hotels inside restored Dutch villas — atmospheric, though not beachfront.

Timing a honeymoon

December to March is the safe answer: the south coast is dry and calm, the hills are clear, and the whole classic route works. It is also peak season, so the best properties need booking several months ahead.

April is excellent and slightly less crowded outside the New Year fortnight, though hotter. If your dates fall between May and September, the itinerary should end on the east coast — Trincomalee and Nilaveli are beautiful in those months — rather than the south.

Avoid October and November if you can. It is the least reliable weather of the year, and a honeymoon is the wrong trip to gamble on it.

Practical things worth arranging in advance

Tell your operator and hotels it is a honeymoon. Sri Lankan hotels are generous about this and will usually arrange a room upgrade, flowers, a cake or a private dinner without charge — but only if they know.

Private dining is easy to organise and inexpensive relative to Europe: dinner on the beach, on a tea estate lawn, or by a plunge pool. Ask rather than waiting to be offered.
