Sri Lanka is the closest international destination to India — under an hour from Chennai, about three and a half from Delhi — with direct flights from several Indian cities. Indian passport holders need an ETA. The Ramayana trail, vegetarian food and Buddhist heritage make it a particularly natural fit.
Getting there
Colombo is served directly from Chennai (about 1 hour), Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi (about 3.5 hours), Kochi, Hyderabad, Thiruvananthapuram and Madurai, by SriLankan Airlines, IndiGo, Air India and others. Chennai and Bengaluru have the most frequent services. Because flights are short and cheap relative to European routings, a shorter trip of five to seven days is far more viable from India than from Europe.
Visa
Indian passport holders require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), applied for online at eta.gov.lk before travel. Approval typically arrives within 24 to 48 hours and the standard tourist ETA allows 30 days with double entry. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Apply through the official government portal rather than an agent.
When to go
December to March suits the south and west coasts, and coincides well with the Indian winter travel season and the Christmas–New Year break. Summer holidays in May and June work if the trip is routed to the Cultural Triangle and the east coast. Diwali in October or November falls in the least predictable weather window. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year in mid-April is celebrated in Sri Lanka much as Puthandu is in Tamil Nadu.

The Ramayana trail
Sri Lanka is identified in the Ramayana as Lanka, the kingdom of Ravana, and a well-established pilgrimage circuit links the sites associated with the epic. For many Indian visitors this is the primary reason for the trip rather than an add-on.
The core sites are Seetha Amman Temple at Sita Eliya near Nuwara Eliya, said to be where Sita was held; Ravana Falls and Ravana Cave near Ella; Divurumpola, where Sita is said to have undergone the agni pariksha; Munneswaram and Manavari near Chilaw, associated with Rama's worship of Shiva after the war; and Koneswaram at Trincomalee.
A full Ramayana circuit takes eight to ten days and crosses the island. It combines naturally with the Cultural Triangle and the hill country, since several of the sites are in those regions anyway.
Why short trips work from India
From Europe, a five-day Sri Lanka trip makes little sense — two of those days are spent flying. From Chennai it is a one-hour hop, which changes the arithmetic completely.
Long weekends and five-day trips are entirely viable from South India. A common short format is Colombo–Kandy–Nuwara Eliya over four or five days, or a Cultural Triangle circuit from Colombo. Beach-only trips to Bentota or the south coast also work well over a long weekend from Chennai or Bengaluru.
For longer breaks, the full ten-day circuit or the Ramayana trail are the usual choices.
