Sri Lanka Tours from Germany
Planning a Sri Lanka trip from Germany: flight routings from Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf, when to go around German school holidays, costs in euros, and German-speaking guide availability.
Sri Lanka is about 12–15 hours from Germany with one stop through a Gulf hub or Istanbul, with seasonal non-stop charters from Frankfurt and Düsseldorf. German travellers favour the classic Rundreise — a full-island circuit — and December to March suits it best.
Getting there
Emirates via Dubai, Qatar Airways via Doha, Etihad via Abu Dhabi and Turkish Airlines via Istanbul all connect Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin and Hamburg to Colombo, typically in 12 to 15 hours total. Condor and other operators have run seasonal non-stop charters from Frankfurt and Düsseldorf during the winter season, which cut the journey considerably — worth checking if your dates fall between November and March.
Visa
German passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) obtained online at eta.gov.lk before departure. Approval usually takes 24 to 48 hours, and the standard tourist ETA covers 30 days with double entry. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Use the official site — many German-language sites offering "Sri Lanka Visum" are agents charging a substantial markup.
When to go
December to March is the strongest period for the classic circuit ending on the south-west coast, and coincides with German Weihnachtsferien and Winterferien. The Sommerferien in July and August fall during the southwest monsoon, so a summer trip should run Cultural Triangle, hill country and then east to Trincomalee or Nilaveli. Osterferien in April is excellent but hot, and mid-April brings the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
Budget
A 10-day private tour costs approximately €2,480 per person on Silver, €3,590 on Gold, or €5,890 on Platinum, based on two sharing and including accommodation, all meals, private transport with driver-guide and all entry tickets. Return flights from Germany typically add €600–€1,000. We invoice in USD; euro figures are indicative.
The classic Rundreise, and how long it needs
German visitors typically want to see the country rather than settle on one beach, and the standard request is a full circuit taking in the Cultural Triangle, the hill country, a national park and the coast.
That circuit works properly in ten days and comfortably in fourteen. In seven days it becomes a forced march — roughly five hours of driving most days — which is the single most common correction we make to itineraries clients bring us.
The 14-day version leaves room to add the east coast or a genuine week on the beach at the end, and because we price per person per day rather than per package, extending simply adds days at the same rate.

Worth knowing before you go
- German-speaking guides can be arranged with sufficient notice, though availability is tighter in peak season — worth requesting early rather than close to departure.
- German travellers are the second-largest European source market for Sri Lanka after the UK, and hotels along the classic circuit are well used to German guests.
- The Rundreise format — a structured full-island circuit rather than a single beach base — is the dominant German preference and maps closely onto our 14- and 15-day itineraries.
- Punctuality expectations are worth flagging in advance: Sri Lankan schedules, particularly train times, are treated as approximate rather than binding.
Frequently Asked Questions
- How long does it take to fly from Germany to Sri Lanka?
- Typically 12 to 15 hours with one stop, via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul, from Frankfurt, Munich, Düsseldorf, Berlin or Hamburg. Seasonal non-stop charters from Frankfurt and Düsseldorf have operated during the winter season and cut the journey substantially.
- Do Germans need a visa for Sri Lanka?
- Yes — an Electronic Travel Authorization obtained online at eta.gov.lk before departure, usually approved within 24 to 48 hours, valid for 30 days with double entry. Apply through the official government site rather than one of the many German-language agent sites, which charge a significant markup for the same form.
- Are German-speaking guides available in Sri Lanka?
- Yes, with enough notice. German-speaking driver-guides work regularly in Sri Lanka, but availability is limited in peak season, so it is worth requesting at the planning stage rather than shortly before departure. All our guides work in English as standard.
- How long should a Sri Lanka Rundreise be?
- Ten days covers the classic circuit — Cultural Triangle, hill country, a safari and the south coast — at a reasonable pace. Fourteen days is more comfortable and leaves room for the east coast or a real beach stay at the end. Seven days means either two regions or a great deal of driving.
