It is entirely the wrong conclusion to avoid Sri Lanka in August. The east coast is dry, calm and at its best in exactly those weeks: Trincomalee and Nilaveli have white sand and flat water, and Arugam Bay is at the peak of its surf season. Inland, the Cultural Triangle sits in the dry zone and is largely unaffected.
A well-built August itinerary runs Cultural Triangle, then the hill country, then east. It is the same trip with the final leg reversed, and it works.
