Sri Lanka Tours from China
Sri Lanka is 6–8 hours direct from several Chinese cities. Visa requirements for Chinese passports, Theravada Buddhist heritage, Chinese-speaking guides, food, and costs in yuan.
Sri Lanka is a six to eight hour direct flight from several Chinese cities and holds some of the world's most important Theravada Buddhist sites, including the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and the Sri Maha Bodhi. Chinese passport holders need an ETA, obtained online before travel.
Getting there
Direct services to Colombo have operated from Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu and Kunming with SriLankan Airlines, China Eastern and China Southern, typically taking six to eight hours. Routings and frequencies vary by season, and one-stop connections via Bangkok, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Hong Kong are widely available and often cheaper. Kunming is the shortest hop from mainland China.
Visa
Chinese passport holders need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), applied for online at eta.gov.lk before travel. Approval usually takes 24 to 48 hours and the standard tourist ETA permits 30 days with double entry. The passport must be valid for at least six months beyond arrival. Sri Lanka has periodically offered fee waivers to Chinese visitors as part of tourism promotion — check the official site for current arrangements, as these change.
When to go
December to March suits the south and west coasts and the classic circuit. Chinese New Year, usually late January or February, falls squarely in the best season — book early, as it is peak demand across Asia. The May Day holiday and the October National Day Golden Week both fall in less reliable windows: May sits at the start of the southwest monsoon, so route east, and October is the inter-monsoon period with variable weather on both coasts.
Budget
A 10-day private tour costs approximately ¥19,200 per person on Silver, ¥27,700 on Gold, or ¥45,400 on Platinum, based on two sharing and including hotels, all meals, private transport with a driver-guide and all entry tickets. Return flights from mainland China typically add ¥3,500–¥7,000. We invoice in USD; yuan figures are indicative.
Buddhist heritage
For Chinese visitors with an interest in Buddhism, Sri Lanka offers something distinct from the Mahayana traditions of East Asia: an unbroken Theravada lineage stretching back more than two thousand years, with sites that remain active places of worship rather than monuments.
The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in Kandy houses a tooth said to have been recovered from the Buddha's funeral pyre, and possession of it was historically tied to the right to rule the island. Three daily puja ceremonies open the inner chamber.
At Anuradhapura, the Sri Maha Bodhi was grown from a cutting of the tree at Bodh Gaya under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, planted in 288 BCE — the oldest human-planted tree with a recorded planting date anywhere. Mihintale, twelve kilometres away, is where Buddhism was introduced to the island in 247 BCE.
The Dambulla cave temples add 153 Buddha statues and 2,100 square metres of painted ceilings across five caves in continuous use for two millennia.

Planning around Chinese holidays
The three main travel windows fall very differently against Sri Lankan seasons.
| Holiday | Timing | Sri Lanka conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese New Year | Late Jan – Feb | Peak season, ideal weather. Book several months ahead |
| Qingming | Early April | Very good, though hot; before the monsoon |
| May Day | Early May | Southwest monsoon beginning — route east |
| National Day Golden Week | Early October | Inter-monsoon, least predictable; quiet and inexpensive |
Worth knowing before you go
- Sri Lanka is one of the oldest continuously Buddhist countries in the world, and its Theravada sites hold particular significance for Chinese Buddhist visitors — the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic at Kandy, the Sri Maha Bodhi at Anuradhapura, and Mihintale where Buddhism arrived in 247 BCE.
- The Chinese monk Faxian travelled to Sri Lanka in the 5th century and spent two years there; his account remains an important historical source, and the connection is well known locally.
- Mandarin-speaking guides are available but in limited numbers, so early booking is important — particularly around Chinese New Year and Golden Week.
- Sri Lankan food is chilli-forward and quite different from most Chinese regional cuisines. Milder preparation is available everywhere on request, and Chinese restaurants operate in Colombo, Kandy and the main resort areas.
- Hot water for tea is universally available; Sri Lanka is a tea-producing country and the quality of what you can buy at source is excellent.
