Day by Day Itinerary
Arrival in Colombo → Sinharaja Rainforest
Travel Time: Approx. 3.5 hours from Colombo to Sinharaja. Arrival at Bandaranaike International Airport. Transfer to Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and biodiversity hotspot. Evening Birding: Short walk around the lodge to spot endemic species like the Sri Lanka Hanging Parrot and Layard's Parakeet. Overnight in Sinharaja.
Sinharaja Rainforest – Full Day Birding
Travel Time: No travel today, trekking in the rainforest. Full day birding trek inside the Sinharaja Rainforest. Target Species: Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, Red-faced Malkoha, Green-billed Coucal, and Ashy-headed Laughingthrush. Experience the mixed-species bird flocks, a phenomenon unique to this rainforest. Overnight in Sinharaja.
Sinharaja → Udawalawe National Park
Travel Time: Approx. 2.5 hours from Sinharaja to Udawalawe. Morning transfer to Udawalawe National Park. Afternoon Jeep Safari: Look for raptors like the Changeable Hawk-eagle and Grey-headed Fish Eagle, along with dry zone specialists like the Malabar Pied Hornbill. Elephant sightings are guaranteed here. Overnight in Udawalawe.
Udawalawe → Bundala → Yala
Travel Time: Approx. 1.5 hours to Bundala, then 1 hour to Yala. Morning: Visit Bundala National Park, a RAMSAR wetland site, famous for migratory waders and large flocks of Greater Flamingoes. Transfer to Yala National Park in the afternoon. Evening: Relax at the hotel or taking a walk in the buffer zone. Overnight in Yala.
Yala National Park – Full Day Safari
Travel Time: No travel today, full day safari in Yala. Full day safari in Yala National Park. Birding Highlights: Sri Lanka Junglefowl, Painted Stork, Black-necked Stork, and numerous raptors. Wildlife: High chance of spotting Leopards, Sloth Bears, and Elephants. Overnight in Yala.
Yala → Minneriya/Habarana
Travel Time: Approx. 5 hours from Yala to Habarana. Drive to the Cultural Triangle (Habarana area). En route stops at tanks (reservoirs) for waterbirds like Spot-billed Pelicans and Pheasant-tailed Jacanas. Evening: Visit Minneriya National Park to witness the 'Gathering' of Asian Elephants and spot forest birds. Overnight in Habarana.
Habarana & Sigiriya Sanctuary Birding
Travel Time: Short drives within the area. Morning: Birding in the Sigiriya Sanctuary. Look for the Shaheen Falcon (resident peregrine) on the rock and dry zone forest birds like the White-rumped Shama. Afternoon: Birding around Habarana Lake and nature trails. Overnight in Habarana.
Habarana → Colombo Airport
Travel Time: Approx. 4 hours to the airport. Morning birding session around the hotel grounds. Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport for departure, concluding the birdwatching tour.

Yala National Park
Yala National Park in south-east Sri Lanka has one of the highest densities of leopards anywhere in the world, alongside elephants, sloth bears and crocodiles. Block 1 is the most productive for leopard sightings and the busiest. February to July is the best period, when water is scarce and animals concentrate.
Sabaragamuwa & Uva Provinces
Udawalawe National Park
Udawalawe National Park in southern Sri Lanka is the most reliable place in the country to see wild elephants — several hundred live there year-round in open grassland, and sightings on any drive are close to certain. It is calmer and less crowded than Yala, which makes it the better first safari.
Sabaragamuwa & Southern Provinces
Sinharaja Forest Reserve
Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka's last substantial stretch of primary lowland rainforest and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It holds a majority of the island's endemic bird species and much of its endemic flora. Visits are on foot with a compulsory guide. Expect leeches, and bring socks.
North Western Province
Kalpitiya
Kalpitiya is a peninsula on Sri Lanka's north-west coast and the country's kitesurfing centre, with two wind seasons — roughly May to September and December to March. Its shallow lagoon suits beginners, and large spinner dolphin pods gather offshore between November and April.
Eastern Province
Trincomalee
Trincomalee on Sri Lanka's north-east coast has one of the largest natural harbours in the world, the Hindu temple of Koneswaram on a clifftop above it, and the calm white-sand beaches of Nilaveli and Uppuveli nearby. The season runs May to September — the inverse of the south coast.
